How to Circus! Week 3: Poi Spinning

One of the awesome benefits of Social Circus is that it allows us to build a community to help combat the social isolation faced by many individuals within our society. Circus also teaches us to adapt to the ever changing conditions presented to us, whether on stage, during a workshop, or in our day-to-day lives. While we’re all distancing ourselves during the Covid-19 pandemic, let’s not forget to make time to have fun and play.

Normally, Thursday evenings Danielle would be having fun teaching circus with the Autism Society, Newfoundland & Labrador at Moving Pictures Dance. During the Covid-19 pandemic, however, she invites you instead to come play with her in her temporary, virtual home studio, via live videos which were initially aired via the Ignite Circus Facebook Page (Week 3: Poi aired April 2 2020). She has prepared 5 weeks worth of lessons that will teach you first how to build some fun circus toys, and then the basics on how begin playing with your new toys to help keep you active and occupied while you hang out at home during the pandemic. The best part, is most of the materials for these toys are probably already somewhere around your house, maybe in your kitchen, basement or garage.

Hopefully the pandemic won’t last the duration of the 5 weeks , and Danielle will be back with her students again sooner rather than later, but if not, this will be a fun way for us to keep in touch and pass the time together. (Spoiler Alert: at the time this video was uploaded on Youtube, we are now on week 6 of the pandemic, so more How-to Circus! videos may be upcoming in the near future, stay tuned!)
